Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a widely recognized evidence-based intervention in behavioral and physical healthcare. MI is a person-centered, directive approach focused on helping people resolve expectable ambivalence about change. MI is not a series of techniques to be “used on people,” but a way of being with people that facilitates motivation for change. This workshop will provide an introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI), including the spirit, principles, and specific skills of the model. The current evidence base of MI will be examined, along with appropriate uses of MI. This will be a highly interactive workshop with ample opportunities to learn and practice the empathic and directive skills of MI.
